Crash, 2004

Crash, 2004
Director: Paul Haggis
Cast: Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Thandie Newton, Matt Dillon

Stage: Home Theatre on a lonely night
.

Crash in short: Over a thirty-six hour period in Los Angeles, a handful of disparate people's lives intertwine as they deal with the tense race relations that belie life in the city. Among the players are: the Caucasian district attorney, who uses race as a political card; his Caucasian wife, who, having recently been carjacked by two black men, believes that her stereotypical views of non-whites is justified and cannot be considered racism; the two black carjackers who use their race both to their advantage and as an excuse; partnered Caucasian police constables, one who is a racist and uses his authority to harass non-whites, and the other who hates his partner because of those racist views, but who may have the same underlying values in his subconscious; a black film director and his black wife, who believes her husband doesn't support their black background enough, especially in light of an incident with the racist white cop; partnered police detectives and sometimes lovers.

Preps: I am not familiar with this piece, although it must have been in local cinemas a while ago. The cast sounds splendid, the storyline also. Mmm, my Sandra Bullock. A must see then. Let's check it out.

Reality:
Wow. One of the better ones lately on the racism topic. Or to be more exact, prejudice topic. It emphasizes the meaning of all prejudice we are born, raised, burdened with. And what it may lead us into. In perticular, the piece addresses violence towards black people and mixed people (half black, mexicans, etc). The whole US knows they steal, rape, make violent moves all of the sudden.. However, is this for real? My heart shook all evening because the movie gave me the thrills. The negative ones. The ones where your soul wants to crumble back in deep shame of being a white person. Because if we want it or not, because of limited individuals of our colour and race, the rest of the world looks at us as if we are the biggest barbarians there is. In some sense, I might agree. However, violence because prejudice cannot and in reality isn't limited to race, sex, genre of music, height, etc. It is limited to areas, where it's praised and taught, where you are doing right when threatening people that look, feel, taste, smell differently.
The movie faces us with numerous important scenes. We are supposed to take the good deed out of it. The line. The one thing we cannot do to each other. In some cases it's verbal violence. In others shooting around just for fun. In some physical abuse of black man's wife. It doesn't matter if they are famous.
The one thing that is indesputeably gorgeous about this piece is the 36 hour slot, where the paths of all those people, who even don't know each other, somehow collide. So they face each other in situations they could never imagine. The cop, molesting the wife of the famous director, gets stuck with her under a burning car, rescuing her. Life is a funny thing and world a small place - eventually you could run into the one you molested one day ago and would be forced to help him or even worse, would be in the position of asking a favour of that same person.

The piece will make you respect life and its diversity very much. It will make you think about all the abuse, anger, everything you express to the persons that surround you or some unknown people. Spectacular script, good delivery. I didn't notice some highlights on other effects, however they weren't needed. The moral of the story - if you have a powerful story, it doesn't need much enhancement. Same as in music with the lyrics :)

The crash is obviously named after the collision point - where some cars crash and some fates definitely change forever.

My personal rating: 9,0
(superb movie, a solid story with one of the best possible deliveries).

Miss Congeniality 1 & 2, 2000, 2004

Miss Congeniality 1 & 2, 2000, 2004
Director: Donald Petrie; John Pasquin
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Michael Caine (1); Regina King (2), Benjamin Brett (1)

Stage: home theatre, two Thursdays in a row. TV selection

The first part in short: Undercover FBI agent Gracie Hart shows no signs of having any femininity in her demeanor or appearance. Generally a bright and capable agent, she is in trouble at work when she makes an error in judgment in a case which results in a near disaster. As such, one of her by-the-books colleagues, Eric Matthews, who has never shown any inclination of thinking outside the box, is assigned to lead the high profile case of a terrorist coined The Citizen instead of her, while she is facing possible disciplinary action. Gracie pieces together the evidence to determine that The Citizen's next target will be the Miss United States beauty pageant. The pageant represents everything that Gracie abhors. Despite Gracie's mannish demeanor, Eric, with no other undercover female agent remotely fitting the demographic, assigns her to go undercover as a pageant contestant to see if she can flush out The Citizen...

The second part in short:
After Cheryl Frasier and Stan Fields are kidnapped, Gracie goes undercover in Las Vegas to find them. (really in short :)

Preps:
I cannot help it, Sandra Bullock is one of the cutest actresses in the whole world. As much as I can say that the movies she works in, are more or less stupid comedies, I cannot resist watching her. In my honest opinion, she could do more work like the Blind Side (oscar!), however, these two pieces are a typical selection, where she would normally cast and where she is notorious (famous).

Reality: Well, the first part takes you to the "miss USA" pageant and all the miracles that go with it. The behaviour, the make up, the fallen legend and the next hot thing in the oven. Meaning, I truly need to clean my obstacles before stopping laughing like I have never before. Now, to be really honest, the director took a deep dive into the world of laughter (from being a smartass at the police force, a tough woman without a single female cell in the body, to graceful Gracie Hart. My ironic veins were pouring when I was looking at that piece. Obviously I think Sandra is great. But only with the tone of the voice and the poses she makes, the funny laughter and the scenes themselves. Apart from that I don't think she is giving a good cast here, neither she's very into this role. But in general it suits her normal roles in more stupid romantic comedies, obviously she will also have a romantic fling,.. anyhow. The movie that cannot dissappoint you, if you are looking for a family Sunday evening fun. It will make you laugh, even more, it will make you admire the miss pageant (imagine that :) and it will make you think world piece. All in all, it does what romantic comedies are supposed to do. Love the characters and spread the love afterwards. However, this is a tough genre, lots of movies screaming for attention. This isn't one of the best, least said. i would place it on the other side of the curve. Nevertheless, I admit my affection towards Sandra and I will always watch it when on TV. Maybe one of the more stupid reasons I can name, but this is deriving from the heart, not really the mind. If you need to listen to my mind, don't waste your time on this piece (saying this for both of them), because it's really a waste of time.

Now, if I am more than swallowing the first part, the second part is merely a shadow of a first one. No imagination, scenes that cannot be real. Obviously a happy ending, obviously they need to attach it to the first part. Have you ever noticed how rare a movie lives up to the expectations if it's a sequel? In theory, a director should at least watch the first part before making the second one. The second part is simply stupid and underestimates the intelligence of the audience (ok, and so does 95 % of all romantic comedies, however in this one this is REALLY obvious). What was the director or script writer thinking, I don't know. They might have been high when agreeing on this. It's really a pain to the eyes to watch and I strongly speak against. Despite the fact I have my lovely Sandra. Even she cannot save the party for me.

My personal rating: 1. part - 6,0 (watchable); 2.part - 2,0 (blaaaaah. don't. seriously. Don't :)

While you were sleeping, 1995

While you were sleeping, 1995
Director: Jon Turteltaub
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher

Stage: Home theatre, TV selection

While you were sleeping in short:
Lucy's life consists of constant loneliness that is until she saves Peter's life. Now she is a part of his family, and with a strong heart and fate on her side, others begin to realize what a terrific person she is, especially Jack, Peter's brother. An extraordinarily true-to-life sequence of events begin to take place as Lucy and Jack become closer and learn more about each other and themselves than one would ever expect from such coincidental, yet believable events.

Preps: wow, a wonderful surprise on a Thursday evening. I adore Sandra and also Pullman. I saw this piece a few times and it makes me dream away every time.

Reality: As always, not dissappointed. The storyline is interesting, the philosophy behind it even more. How far are you going with things you make up and where do you choose to have the limit? Especially if you are as sad and yearning for love and someone to love (and that would love you back). So she makes something small up which afterwards comes up to a giant fat lie she can't back away from. She grows into the heart of his family, she plays the game until she falls in love with the brother. After that still plays the game. Do women really want to be comfortable until the very last breath?
The charade is really fun to watch and I love the witty scenes and the confusion she brings with her intelligent statements. Also the side role of her friend in the building that proposes to her constantly, is really intriguing.
Setting is placed around Christmas, the perfect time you can forgive her for making things up. The perfect time to be with the family and ones you love. You can easily feel with a person that is all alone, working on Christmas. So with the personification of the viewer, a bit of romance, fluffy yearning.. and the director wins the homerun.
Can you give me any reason I shouldn't marry your brother?, she asks Pullman. What would be the answer if he told her he loves her? Then the charade of the wedding, family love, etc, would vanish and she would be stuck with her conscience. The mixup at the wedding scene is really touching. We all need to confess our sins, especially if they are mixing with other people, influencing other people's feelings. The proposal at the ticket station is so romantic it really makes your heart turn a bit mushy. Life doesn't always turn out the way you planned.

My personal rating: 7,0
(a solid romantic comedy. You will love it, especially if you are fond of family way of living and are cheering for happy endings).

Two weeks notice, 2002

Two weeks notice, 2002
Director: Marc Lawrence
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Hugh Grant

Stage: home theatre

Two weeks in short: Explores the question of whether it's ever too late to say 'I love you'. The story revolves around Lucy Kelson, a brilliant but neurotic attorney, and her client, who is "charming, irresponsible and fabulously wealthy."

Preps: none in perticular - I am not familiar with the piece, but am a strong fan of Sandra Bullock, Hugh Grant I suppose is a giveaway in terms of me seeing this movie as a classic romantic and not really high quality comedy. Unfortunately.

Reality: Well.. unfortunately I am right. The movie leaves me cold as ice. The setting is not as wrong as it might seem.. the bursting city might be a brilliant stage for a prepotent, selfish male that is seeking attention of stupid females that are lying at his feet. Sandra Bullock in the role of someone that isn't supposed to be one of them or at least act like one. When the story develops, she becomes one of those items on his list. It is impossible for me to imagine a worse scenario, worse acting at this point. This piece is one of those pathetic comedies where you are seeking romance with a spotlight, looking for some attraction between the main actors (where it was truly supposed to be present) and trying your best way to live until its end. This piece is not remarkable nor something you should see at all. Be sure that if you succeed to miss it, it might be considered a present to your spare time. As much as I love Sandra Bullock and sometimes admit that Grant rocks the world of romantic comedies, this piece is a huge dissappointment in all terms. Running around making a big deal of the "everybody's replaceable but this perticular nanny that is taking care of my life and making it count".. well.. yuk! Obviously, the romantic Hollywood ending. What else?

My personal rate: 1,0 (no comment, not worth my time and your time.)

Practical Magic, 1998

Practical Magic, 1998
Director: Griffin Dunne
Cast: NIcole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Stockard Channing

Practical Magic in Short: Sally and Gillian Owens have always known they were different. Raised by their aunts after their parents' death, the sisters grew up in a household that was anything but typical--their aunts fed them chocolate cake for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens' sorcery also carries a price--some call it a curse: the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that threatens the lives of all the Owens women.

Stage: Home TV selection

Preps: I think I have seen this in the theatres, but didn't like it a lot. Now, as I don't have anything constructive to do and I am a fan of Kidman and Bullock, let's see if I was wrong.

Reality: Well, sometimes you are correct in the first time you decide for something. This is a good example of not really brilliantly thought-through scenario and furthermore, a weak story. Practical magic should offer something more than the series Bewitched, in this sense or in this case it is not so. It is just a filmed version up to some extent, of the named series from 80'ies. Bullock and Kidman are picted as naive, the cast is weak. The fooling around with some magic is somehow cute or romantic in some moments, but nothing more. The curse they are trying to break, is weak and without any real background, therefore I don't buy it.

Apart from this, no really positive feelings. I get bored and despite the fact, that I love watching both ladies, in one hour I get bored to death and switch the channel. Not enough to stimulate my brais at all. So, I don't recommend it.

My personal rating: 2,0 (some cute moments and some practical ideas how to make some things more interesting - or try to pull out some magic).

28 Days, 2000

28 Days, 2000
Director: Betty Thomas
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortensen, Dominic West, Elisabeth Perkins

Stage: Home TV selection on a rainy Sunday evening

28 days in short: A big-city newspaper columnist is forced to enter a drug and alcohol rehab center after ruining her sister's wedding and crashing a stolen limousine

Preps:
nothing in perticular. Remember seeing this ages ago. And I adore Sandra Bullock, nothing more I could want from a Sunday evening.

Reality: Now let me think. How hard is it to accept to be an alcoholic and how hard it is to decide to go back. To think about your life, your decisions and your way of living and making it right. Are you entitled to make it right? Who will believe you are for real? Who will make your path easier and who will support you when being down? The movie is supposed to be somehow a romantic comedy (the relationship between the "alcoholic" Sandra and her spouse. The problem is he doesn't see her as and alcoholic and furthermore, doesn't really support her. No problem here, but she really wants to get better after spending some time in an institution.

How about making friends in an institution? A hard way to follow. Hard talking, hard problems.. but.. they can get to the core of your soul and in the end make it allright. The problem is that most re-habs don't want to change and even the best institution won't make them feel better or change the way they live their lives. In a sense, makes them go back to drinking instantly when leaving the institution.

I believe there is a lesson to be learned here for anyone. We are all walking from time to time on the verge of insanity, that is connected with alcohol. And some of us go through this. The others are so brave that they ended up the better path and didn't need an institution to cure them. Nevertheless, a good piece to think about how you solve your problems in past and how do you do it now. Is it connected with alcohol? Is this a backyard, where you drown your problems, or just an escape for a few hours that you can control? The piece implies you better not turn into a pool where you sink your problems. Because it is a long and painful way to come back.

My personal rating: 6,0 (a decent fun for Sunday. Plus: will make you think about the drinking nights and the sense they make. Or not any sense they make. And the problem you have when starting to get cured)

Speed, 1994

Speed, 1994
Director: Jan de Bont
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper

Speed in short: A young cop must save the passengers of a bus that has a bomb set to explode if the bus goes below 50 MPH.

Stage: Home TV selection

Preps: None in perticular. I have seen this in the local movies as a young girl and I adored the couple, the adventure, the idea that I could be as bold as she was and adopt a cute guy like I thought he was. Or be a brave police officer. Has to do a lot of childhood dreaming and interaction with movie characters.

Reality: I see this for the millionth time. Through this movie I became a deep fan of Sandra Bullock and am still now (although when I see her act in this case or for this time, I cannot tell why. Because it's simply said, horrible. It's not just the words or the scenario, it's the whole package). The same goes for Keanu Reeves. You can see in one of my critics (Top Gun), that I claim that to be one of the movies of my childhood. Well, the same goes for Speed. I have wanted to see this for million times and every now and then I saw it again. Now the gap between the last viewing and this one is more than 10 years and when I see it again, all the soft hystorical feeling is here, but from the critic point of view, the movie lacks energy, believability, or dare I say reality (you just don't jump over a gap with a bus and stay solid, you don't crash with a metro and survive (not like this).. it lacks true scenario and some energy between the actors. Although when seeing this as a young lady, I saw it straightforward (probably wanted to see it, anyway) - now I don't even though I try really hard.

Speed was a synonim for successful US cop forces at that point and in that time, did a great job. Looking it again from a whole different aspect and with a different approach, besides from memoirs what it was like seeing it as a child, nothing else remains. Pity.

My personal rating: 6,0 (for the sake of my memories as a child. As Top Gun, Ghost, Pretty Woman, etc, also Speed was one of my favourites and the one I could watch over and over again)

A time to kill, 1996

A time to kill, 1996
Director: Joel Schumacher
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConnaughey, Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Spacey

Time to kill in short: A young lawyer defends a black man accused of murdering two men who raped his 10-year-old daughter, sparking a rebirth of the KKK

Stage: home theatre, TV production

Preps: none - I have seen this masterpiece in 1996 at the local movies and I was so impressed I wanted to see it again somewhere in the future. However, I never had the chance until now, so I grabbed a finer (surprisingly) TV selection on a Sunday evening at home.

The movie is a remarkable piece on the way we are surrounded with prejudice, which we carry from our neighbours, childhood, state we live in (country), maybe ourselves and our fear. The reflection of hatred against dark/black people shocks me to my very bones and frightens the hell out of me. We still have those dark places in the world, where we all behave like animals - a piece of that is embedded in this movie. There are animals inside of each person (different species), which awaken, when threatened, when provoked or when they see a bigger point in it. And they cannot be controlled.

Things around black issues spread in this movie like plague. The action revolving around the case is astounding, the crying is real and the feelings of disgust run through my veins. The cast is brilliant, from Samuel, to Kevin Spacey and furthermore, to the selected team on the justice side. The story about the young girl, who was raped, at the final lawyer speech, shocks every person in that court and also every individual behind the screen, watching this movie.

It will rock your sympathy, it will make you think about the eternity and who are those that really deserve to live and die. It did in my case.

My personal rating: 9,0 (pure rage and dissappointment upon human cruelty will shock your nerves)

The Lake House, 2006

The Lake House, 2006
Director:Alejandro Agresti
Cast:Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Christopher Plummer

Lake House in short: A lonely doctor who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its former resident, a frustrated architect. They must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it's too late.

Stage: Home theatre
Preps: I thought I have already seen this one. Seeing Sandra Bullock and Keanu sort of ringed my bell. But I fully remembered after 10 minutes. A beautiful love story, a chick movie, definitely worth seeing for another time.

Reality: I was right. A beautiful story about the longing, waiting and trying to find the one true love we all seek. And then, ironically, finding it two years before your time. The idea of having something like a post box (a real one, not an e-mail one) as a gateway between two worlds, is amusing, romantic and sets all the butterflies in me. Again, Bullock cast is one of her typical, not like in her latest The blind side, still, you will adore her, if you are a fan of the genre. And furthermore, Keanu here is not a hot shot like we saw him in the Matrix, but in my opinion, from time to time he suits damn well into these cissy romantic comedies (see drama Sweet November and his cast there - also worth seeing if you like the genre).

Don't watch it if you don't like romance in a movie and wet eyes. Definitely watch it to dream away in the night, how cool would it be to.. well, you know what I mean. And the main idea I believe is, that it's once in a lifetime you find something really worth waiting and fighting for. Completely agree.

Fav. quote.. She was more real to me than anything I have ever known.. when describing his relationship with her

My personal rating: 8,0 (in this genre, one of the good ones :)

The blind side, 2009

The blind side, 2009
Director:John Lee Hancock
Cast: Sandra Bullock (Oscar 2009, main female act), Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Jae Head

Short synopsis: The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.

Stage: Home theatre

Preps:
I have always adored Sandra Bullock's filmography. In spite of the fact that mostly she acts in chewy romantic comedies, or something that pretends to be more serious (like Speed), she has been my movie star since my childhood. The surprise when she won an oscar thoroughly dried my brains. I need to see this.

Reality: The movie grasps me and doesn't leave me breathing until the end. The story is so unique and so emotional, Bullock is absolutely brilliant - the highlight of her career, I think. This powerful woman that she plays, and brilliant in everything that she does, well, for once, I want to be that woman. The idea of doing something out of the blue and get this world to be a better place, is something that will touch anyone. I am sure that it cannot be that perfect, you don't get such mental health in the family, and perfect kids, and you don't get to learn something in two months to replace the missing ten years, but it is based on a true story and I believe that most of it must have happened. And that yet alone stands amazing in my head. After seeing this, I know why Sandra Bullock got the oscar. This time, with no political dilemma, deserved.

My personal rate: 9,0 (I loved it, truly. If it weren't so romantic in a sense that you don't get this perfect family that is shown here (yes, I know it is based on true story, but still), it would have been a straight 10.
